Easy DIY Alphabet Matching Game

I was recently at Dollar Tree and happened to look through the school/office section.  I didn't expect to find anything exciting mid-year, but I found these adorable classroom decorations and immediately knew what I wanted to use them for.

Super Tot and I are working a lot on learning the alphabet right now, so I thought doing an uppercase/lowercase letter match with them would be perfect.  I didn't want 26 (x2) pieces spread out all over, so I decided to make them attach to each other when he matches them.  Here is a simple tutorial for what I did.

I present these to Super Tot in two bowls - one with the worms and one with the apples.  He lays out all the apples (uppercase) and places the correct worm (lowercase) in each one.
I also purchased a second set with frogs and lily pads, which I intend to use for something similar.  Additionally, I have enough of the apples and worms left to do numbers 1-10, which I am excited about, too!

Alphabet Match

Pinterest Challenge Day 8

We were out of town for Labor Day, so I had to skip a couple days, but I'm back with today's Pinterest Challenge post.  I saw this idea on Pinterest close to a year ago. I tucked it away and finally decided to do it with Super Tot.  He didn't want to do the whole alphabet today, but he enjoyed it, so it is back in his workbox for tomorrow.  It was easy, free and fun!

I just wrote the letters of the alphabet onto an empty paper towel roll.  I gave it to him, along with a sheet of alphabet stickers I had on hand, and let him get to work matching the letters.  We've done similar activities on a sheet of paper before, but I loved that this gave him a slightly new perspective and allowed for a different sensory & motor experience.

Traceable Alphabet Book

ABC & 123
Tracing Book
I have wanted to make an alphabet tracing book for Super Tot for a while now and finally got around to doing it.  I am thrilled with how it turned out, too!

I started with a 4x6 plastic photo album from Dollar Tree.  It had room for 36 photos, which was perfect for including the entire alphabet plus the numerals 1-10.

Next, I went to this website and created my tracing cards.  I used the Print Style Worksheets Sentence Worksheet Maker.  I did one letter at a time so that I could enlarge them to my desired size.  For the “sentence,” I put a space before the letter and then typed the Uppercase & Lowercase letter.  I clicked on Portrait-Style and ¾ Inch Size.  You can even change the color of the lines, as well as the text color.  Then, I hit print and zoomed it to 250%.  This printed only a portion of the page, but I only needed one set of letters.  I tried numerous other sizes and variations, but this was the only one that worked for what I wanted.

I redid this for each letter and numeral.  Then, I got to cutting!  Using a paper cutter, I cut each letter and numeral out and attached them to cardstock using scrapbook adhesive.
I then placed them in the album and searched for clipart I liked for the cover (I don’t own the clipart, so I can’t share it).

Using a dry erase marker, Super Tot will be able to use this book over and over!  He loves to write and is so excited to be learning his letters.

The completed project took under an hour and used supplies I already had on hand (including the album that I had previously purchased for such a project).

I plan to have this available for Super Tot in the car during our upcoming Staycation (see my Staycation Binders here).  Then, I will be placing the tracing book into one of Super Tot’s Busy Bags (see here) for use at church, dr.’s office waiting rooms, etc.  I know we will get LOTS of use out of this simple and affordable project!

Letter Crafts - Uppercase & Lowercase

Monday is officially our first day of the new school year, and I can hardly wait!  This year, I will be working with Super Tot on learning his letters.  We will be doing one new letter each week, and having a review week every 6 weeks.

I have always loved the letter crafts that I have seen on various blogs, and I knew I wanted to incorporate that concept into our lessons.  Some of the crafts I have seen use the letters at different angles, which I thought might confuse Super Tot during the time that he is initially learning them.  I hope to do this type of activity each year, so I know I will use those in the future.  However, my creative side also wanted to create some new crafts that I hadn't seen before.  I was unable to be original with some of the letters, but you might find some new ideas and inspiration here.

Super Tot will be doing these crafts as he learns the letters, but I have put together an ABC Book for him that shows my examples.

Here they are:
